Spring Has Sprung at Sunland Springs Village Bee

Our Sunland Springs Village Bee typically falls around Easter and springtime. It’s often the last Bee that our winter visitors attend before returning to their summer homes. Saturday, April 2nd, was bright and beautiful outside and our volunteers brought that same energy inside for a sweet day of blanket-making and fellowship.

Our Bee hosts (SSV Quilt Club) set us up with power for our sewing machines and for our bodies (coffee, coffee, coffee), and they had yummy snacks for that mid-morning boost. The lunch break was extra special because it was time to draw for our gorgeous raffle quilt. We were thrilled when AZ Blankets 4 Kids Board member, Cindy McCormick, was the lucky winner. This year, our raffle quilt was a real stunner and the bucket of tickets we drew from was full. I thought Cindy was super lucky when I asked how many tickets she had floating around in that big bucket and she replied, “just one”. Congratulations!

Maybe the luck connection had something to do with Mountain Brook Village, because two big winners hail from there. Cindy was the first, then the Absolutely Amazing Allie Watkins, took the 50/50 prize of almost $100. Allie always rocks the free motion quilting at our Bees and is an excellent teacher of all things quilty, so we paired her up with new volunteer, Mattie, for the day. It doesn’t take much to be bitten by the quilting bug, and I think Mattie will be back for more blanket-making tips and tricks. The other half of the raffle winnings went to our fine hosts at SSV. Thanks so much to Jan and crew for your hospitality (and your decadent ice cream treats).

Last, but not least, the treasure trove of goodies in the door prize basket went to Laurie Maestas, who worked diligently hand tying blankets during the Bee. Cheers to your win and thank you for sharing your time and talents with us.

This day brought 56 volunteers together, who donated 84 blankets at the door and completed an additional 28 blankets during the Bee. This makes a total of 112 blankets for the day, 4,500 blankets for the year, and 144,168 blankets delivered since our inception in 2001.

We’re so grateful for the countless hours and giving hearts that make these numbers grow and help us wrap our kids in comforting hugs from their cuddle blankets. We hope to see you this summer at Las Palmas Grand, for our Bee on June 4th. Until then, happy stitching!
