We kicked off the new year with a Busy Bee on January 6th at Weaver’s Needle RV Resort in Apache Junction. It was a big one with 84 attendees, sewing machines whirring, hand tying, cutting, pressing, layering, folding, snacking, lunching, and just plain having a good time!
This is a special venue that accommodates a large group. Volunteers are guided to parking spots and driven to the community room by golf cart. There was lots of muscle on hand to help us unload supplies and get set up. The community always provides an incredible spread of treats in the morning and a salad luncheon. Our beautiful door prize basket went home with Gladys Van Peursem from La Hacienda RV Resort while Kathy Van DenVergh of Apache Junction was the lucky 50/50 winner.
Bee Newbie – Sue Gray
A first time Bee attendee was Sue Gray. Sue and her husband Tom come from Becken, Minnesota. Their blended family consists of 3 daughters, 1 son, and 8 grandchildren.
Sue has been sewing for around 60 years. She was 8 years old when her grandmother taught her how to sew on a treadle sewing machine. She continued her love of sewing making clothes for herself and then later for her children. Her children wore the clothes she said, until they got too cool for them.
Sue started quilting 30 years ago. She loves all the steps and assembly that goes into making a quilt, but professed, her favorite is making the tops.
Friendships are sewn one stitch at a time. It was wonderful to have Sue join us at the Bee.
Bee and Board Veteran – Susan Quisenberry
A familiar face to many at the Weaver’s Needle Bee, was Susan Quisenberry. Susan was originally from Denver, CO. Moving here 27 years ago, she now lives in Gilbert.
Susan was one of the original Board members of AZ Blankets 4 Kids. Back then, they held the Bees at the Chandler Police Station.
Susan first took a quilting class in 1999, at what then was Sally’s on Main Street in Mesa. She was hooked and has continued to quilt. She likes best making the tops and binding the quilts.
Susan is just one of many who has contributed to years of making it possible to bring a little sparkle in children’s lives.
Twenty blankets were donated finished at the door and 54 were completed at the Bee for a total of 76 quilts. Not too shabby at all! Thanks to all the volunteers for another fabulous Bee!
