Our Volunteers Are EVERYTHING

AZ Blankets 4 Kids is an all volunteer non-profit organization. Whether our volunteer is serving on our Board, sewing with one of the 30+ groups who make blankets for our kids, or working independently, we are so grateful for their time and talents. Without them, we are nothing. With them, we’ve delivered 162,936 blankets to seriously ill and traumatized children in our community.

You hear about many of our sewing groups if they host quilting bees for us, but you miss out on seeing a lot of great people doing great work. This is our opportunity to shine a spotlight on them.

In early March we attended a quilting bee and luncheon with our friends at Queen Valley. Five AZ Blankets 4 Kids board members joined ten ladies from Queen Valley. Letty Fowell built another bountiful basket as a door prize and you see her, above, presenting it to the winner, Tita Hartley. At the end of the day these lovely ladies presented us with 45 finished quilts. Thank you for the fellowship, the food, and beautiful blankets.

Our next stop was a maiden mini bee with our new friends at The Resort RV Park, in Mesa. There were 21 ladies from The Resort and seven ladies from AZB4K. As a brand new bee hive, these ladies worked happily to finish quilts in progress that we provided. They served delicious morning snacks and surprised us with a soft serve ice cream sundae bar after lunch. Jean Burris was the lucky winner of Letty’s pretty-in-pink door prize basket. We’re looking forward to beeing with them again next year.

The sweet smiles above come from the Golden Vista sewing group in Apache Junction. This photo from February shows them with 42 of their 194 donated quilts so far this year.

The pretty piles of 100 quilts in the van above are sorted by a volunteer with the Monte Vista group in Mesa.

Miles of smiles above from the ladies at Montessa in Gold Canyon, posing with 112 of their donated blankets.
I think we caught Barb Charleton mid chuckle, above, with Letty Fowell on the left and Jeanette Baetsle on the right. If you’ve been a friend of AZB4K for a while, you will have seen many of Barb’s adorable blankets as well as the scrappy bear shirts we all treasure and wear to our various bees. In this recent creation, Barb included a little red riding hood doll, complete with ribbon tied cape and dimensional skirt. We can’t wait to see what clever design she comes up with next.

Heike Davis surprised us with a donation of 20 soft and cuddly fleece blankets. She has added a border around some prints and carefully machine bound all sides, making these not only pretty, but sturdy and ready for some serious snuggles.

Thank you to all our volunteers for helping us provide blugs (blanket + hugs) to nearly 163,000 kids!

  1. Yes this is a wonderful organization and I am very proud to be a part of it. You all are my tribe. I’m counting the days until I’m at the next bee and seeing you! Big hugs to everyone!
