Banner Children’s Hospital welcomes young patients to their hospital room with a blanket, pillowcase and stuffed animal. This goes a long way to soothe the nerves of the patient and their family. AZ Blankets 4 Kids is proud to be a part of this warm welcome.
Banner Children’s Hospital became an AZB4K recipient agency in 2002, when they were Desert Samaritan Hospital and then Cardon Children’s Hospital. In the last five years we have delivered over 7,000 comfort blankets to Banner Children’s Hospital.
Many loving, creative people make comfort quilts for AZ Blankets 4 Kids. Barb Hopkins, an AZB4K board member on our Distribution Committee, recently delivered 155 cheerful, cozy blankets. Once the blankets are carted into the hospital in giant rolling bins, they await a sweet volunteer who weekly washes and dries all of the quilts at the facility laundry. They also check for pins and loose threads so every blanket is safe to put on the bed for each patient. Sometimes, depending on the season, there are different fabric patterns on the blankets. This delivery included several Halloween quilts.
We serve 28 agencies in Metro Phoenix (primarily in the East Valley). Thousands of critically ill and at risk children receive comfort through the loving kindness of our dedicated volunteers. Every blanket is imbued with the love and care of every person who had a hand in making the blanket. Knowing the child is comforted at the hospital and that they take that comfort home with them to keep, is the best reward for our volunteers.
