JustServe 9/11 Day of Service Bee – 2025

September 13, 2025 – clear skies – ☀️ 95°

Friends of JustServe.org had a busy day on September 13th. We met in Gilbert for a Bee from 9 to 3, but our event was only one of many. Festivities began at 7:30 with a free pancake breakfast and flag ceremony, followed by service opportunities at a food bank, assembling hygiene kits, and donating at clothing, shoe and food drives.

Our high temperature stayed in the double digits so it was a nice reprieve and sign that cooler temps are on their way. There were 42 guests, including eight board members from AZ Blankets 4 Kids. This was our second year taking part in the 9/11 Interfaith Day of Service and we plan to make next year our third. It’s fun to have a mix of our experienced volunteers working alongside newbies. We love to spread the love of quilting wherever we go, and this Bee offered an opportunity to introduce some very young volunteers to our organization.

Our hosts provided a tasty lunch of sandwiches, chips, pickles, and cookies. There was also some delicious homemade banana nut bread and other morning treats to give us a boost as we began our Bee. We would like to send out a special thank you to Ruth Pratt Woods for a generous donation of beautiful fabric. We were able to use some of it right away, as backing, with perfect prints to match with piles of completed tops.

Sandy Howell won the door prize of a $20 gift card to Hobby Lobby and Kelli Green (hi! that’s me!) won $41 from the 50/50 raffle. Our kind coordinator, Karin Brimhall, donated the other half of the raffle back to AZB4K. Thank you to everyone who shopped our fabric sale during the Bee and to those who found new treasures in our freebies.

Bee by the numbers: 32 quilts brought in at the door (with special thanks to Mary Stolze and Sue Jacoby). 19 finished at the Bee. That’s a total of 51 blankets ready to be delivered to our kids!

Thank you all for making this day of service so productive and joyful! We look forward to next year.

We would love to see you at our next Bee on Saturday, October 25, at Palmas Del Sol in Mesa.
